Kit Major Deals With Depression On 'When The Drugs Don't Work'

We spoke with Kit Major about her latest single that deals with the emotions of depressive episodes not healed by drugs

What inspired your track ‘When The Drugs Don’t Work’? - what is it about?

I wrote the song after a depressive episode where I was already trying to take care of myself and stay on top of my meds. I couldn’t understand why I was still so depressed so I wrote a note in my phone asking the question, “what happens when the drugs don’t work?”. This song is a message to me and anyone else who has ever felt isolated and alone in sadness.

What inspired the video?

Since I wrote WTDDW from a darker place, I wanted the visuals to be lighter. I got to make the music video with my best friend and collaborator, Noël Dombroski who directed, edited and designed the video. We took inspiration from the line “Little Princess hurt locked away inside her palace” and created a twisted fairytale for the video’s storytelling. For when I’m sad in my room, I don’t feel like someone surrounded by old water bottles and coffee cups, I feel like a Disney princess, crying in the halls of a palace. I don’t see my depression as a dark and scary thing, it’s a part of me, and has shaped me into who I am and how I feel and perceive the world. There are many sides to us as humans, we are not just one thing and one layer - so that’s why there’s multiple perspectives in the video.

What was the shooting process like?

We did the project during COVID so the sense of loss and isolation was a bit of reality mixed with the fantasy we invented. The crew was just the two of us during quarantine, so it truly felt like a fun, chaotic sleepover! We went to my grandparent’s house which is now empty, and spent the day cleaning and rearranging furniture. I got to explore and see the house that I spent so much time growing up in through a new perspective - it really did feel like running through the depths of my mind. I think my favorite scene to shoot was the indoor rain - it was a mix of practical and VFX effects! Noël stood on a ladder and poured water on me through a watering can - it was very cold, but I would do it again in a heartbeat!

What’s next for Kit Major?

Yes! I’ve got my next single on the horizon, “Party Street” which is set for release in June! There are also collaborations, visuals, and more music coming this summer that I’m so excited about. June will mark the next chapter with my music and I couldn’t be happier about that.
