Thick’s “Fake News”: The Response to Failing Media

“Fake News” hails from Thick’s latest EP, 5 Years Behind, with a music video that highlights the failure of the American media to explain a world that’s already far too unreal to be sensationalized. In response, the Brooklyn-based trio, Thick, create their own parodical vision of a biased news channel: Thick Network.

“Fake News” is like an explosion. Clocking under a minute, the track jumps to a wail of noise that underlies the trio’s chants of fake news and alternating vocal lines. It’s a quick shot of Thick and the energy they’re bringing, expanded on by the music video that creates Thick Network as a news network occupied with its own misogynistic bias.

Thick is a young band that has plenty of room for development, but as a music video and as a track, “Fake News” is the inter-mesh of politics, satire, and Punk that sets Thick’s attitude for the world which their music focuses on. When the world is so unreal, Thick reminds us that even parodies are just a stretch of the imagination away.
