by LEXI MCCOY

Hi! What are your names and pronouns?

Ralph (he/him)

Sapphire/Saph (she/her)

Joe (he/him)

Vic (he/him)

If you had to pick a fictional character to describe your current mood, who would it be and why?

Ralph - I would say Lester Bangs from Almost Famous because I've been talking a lot about the music business lately and I noticed that in my conversations I've become kind of cynical and overly passionate about the changes that need to be made from within the system. Also, I definitely used the term "industry of cool" at some point so that was an obvious moment.

Saph - I just started watching The Legend of Korra. I definitely relate to Korra. She's passionate, stubborn, and a whole lot of personality that is usually good but sometimes counterproductive.

Joe - Currently I guess I kinda feel like Oscar the Grouch. I haven't showered yet today and the news is on in the background, which tends to make me feel a little edgy.

Vic - I have waves where I feel like Fry from Futurama, where I get very lazy and procrastinate.

Without being able play shows, we're asking artists how they've been spending their time during quarantine. What have you been doing to stay busy?

Ralph - We've been chipping away at a lot of new music. Personally, I've been working on my screenwriting chops in quarantine since that's been the easiest thing to work on in solitude but it's a lonely process so I'm finding that I need to strike a balance.

Saph - At the beginning of quarantine I got deep into Animal Crossing New Horizons lol. My island is pretty sweet and has a complete music venue with a stage set up like Cuffed Up's back-line lol. Other than that, Cuffed Up has been writing new music and putting together several virtual live videos, I've been recording an album with another band, and practicing new and old guitar techniques that I've wanted to improve on. I'm also going to start teaching guitar lessons in November or December so that will be fun!

Joe - I've been spending a great deal of time practicing drums and working on new material. I also finished my home recording setup which has enabled us to do a few virtual shows and record demos. When I'm not working on music I've been hanging with our doggies, going for hikes, and reading. Most excitingly my partner, Willow, and I have been planning our wedding!

Vic - I've been spending time practicing bass at home, and working on our new material. I’ve also been spending a lot of time cycling, skateboarding, and surfing. All have been great escapes during all of this. Detaching and sitting in the ocean when surfing has been the most peaceful and helpful for me.

I saw that some new music may be coming out soon! What can you tell us about that?

Ralph - We covered one of our favorite songs "Politicians in My Eyes" from the first all black, proto-punk band from the 70s called DEATH who were re-discovered years ago through a Drag City reissue and the subsequent documentary. We wanted to make a political stance whilst supporting our love/appreciation for the OG punk pioneers before us. That comes out October 28th.

Saph - We're about to release a live video of our song called Donny Darköff. It's about our Commander in Chief. It's a bit of a slow burn but Ralph’s lyrics are cutting and critical in a great way. It's one of my favorite songs to play live. I can't wait for us to officially record it later.

Any tips for writing/staying inspired over quarantine?

Ralph - Reading books, watching films and hearing other people's stories are really inspiring me at the moment. As a storyteller, a lot of us are living in a hamster wheel so a lot of the "living" may need to happen vicariously through others for the time being. There's also absolutely nothing wrong in writing about the hardships/oppression/raw emotions that we're currently feeling, although that can take some time to process in words. We can embrace this and find catharsis in some way as well.

Saph - Quarantine has been perfect for the "consuming" phase of creating art. I've been listening to entire catalogues of artists that I'd previously only skimmed the surface of and I've found it inspiring to listen to their growth over a series of albums. I've also been listening to this podcast called Tape Notes. They interview an artist and producer about an album they made together. I really enjoyed the episode with Ed O'brien (Radiohead's guitarist) and Flood (producer). I feel like I've learned so much from that podcast. When music isn't inspiring me enough I turn to movies, shows, and books! Different art mediums are great for gathering ideas and new concepts to write about later. I have a folder in my phone's notes app where I keep all those ideas.

Joe - Constantly reminding myself that we will one day be on the other side of this pandemic, we will be back out there playing shows, and when we are I want to be at the top of my game. Instructional videos like Benny Greb's The Art and Science of Groove and Dave Elitch's Getting Out of Your Own Way have been great sources of inspiration that have provided me with an endless amount of concepts to take into the practice room. The band has remained as connected as we can throughout quarantine, and I think that sense of camaraderie is what keeps us moving forward and staying inspired.

Vic - There's a lot of new music coming out and it has kept me inspired. I’ve been diving into a lot of bands and albums that I've never heard of before. I'm trying to keep digging deep to keep my music cycles refreshing.
