PREMIERE: Alexa Van Takes On Pop In New Solo Single 'Never Mine'
Alexa Van has shared her first solo-single, a refreshing pop track titled ‘Never Mind’that details the feelings of realizing your partner just isn’t the one.
While you can normally find Alexa Van rocking hard with her band Alexa Van and The Black Outs, today, the LA-based musician has shared her first solo-single and this time, it’s a pop song.
Eschewing wailing guitars and primal drum smashing for icy-drum beats and synthesizers, the new track is an electric introduction into a new genre that we’re excited to follow - best of both worlds, right?! We asked Van for some background on the track and how this project differs from her music with The Black Outs:
"‘Never Mine’ is a song about an ex-boyfriend that I wrote with a different ex-boyfriend who isn't my ex boyfriend anymore. Confused? So am I.
In the middle of quarantine, sitting on my mom's couch in Arizona melting from the 120 degree heat wave, Joshua (guitar player in our band Alexa Van and The Black Outs) suggested we write some music. I told him I wasn't feeling anything rock and roll, so instead; out came a sad pop song. The feelings conveyed are thinking someone was "the one," and the realization that you were wrong. It was awkward, but we love music more than we love feeling comfortable so we hurried into my mom's guest room to record ‘Never Mine’.
The acoustic guitar version of this song was just a skeleton for what became a synth-pop song produced and engineered solely by Joshua (DIY home-studio style.) ‘Never Mine’ is completely different than anything we've written for Alexa Van and The Black Outs.
All thanks to a shitty break up the previous year. I guess those bottled emotions have to come out sooner or later! Thankfully, we have music to channel them into.”
