Los Angeles based Shunkan shares the music video for their track “Little Hell” - inspired by quarantine, community, and a lot of fucking love.

Coming up on nearly six months of no live music, Los Angeles based art-rock band Shunkan has enlisted their community of friends and fans for a collaborative, virtual-karaoke-style music video fueled by the desire to create even as our world is seemingly in a constant state of chaos. Featuring self-recorded videos of people from all across the world in their quarantine hells, highs, and in-betweens, the music video for “Little Hell” is, in a way, a small window into all of our lives right now.

While singer-songwriter and guitarist Marina Sakimoto originally wrote 2019’s “Little Hell” about being stuck in your hometown and feeling guilty about anxiety, she found new meaning in the track when COVID-19 hit and many of us were quickly forced into self-isolation, Sakimoto explained

“Quarantine made me realize how many times I was afraid to go out and live my life, and now that I was physically unable to, I wished I had gone out more. I wished I would've gone to that party or show. Now, I was forcibly in my own little hell and it sucked. But I can't say I haven't learned a lot being stuck here. We can only do our best from here on out.”

Doing our best day to day is all we can really do right now as we adapt to an ever changing world, and Shunkans ability to turn a very hectic time into something creative and collaborative is incredibly admirable and reminds us all that art and community are absolutely necessary - even more-so during difficult times.

“I'm so excited to share this video because I love my community. I'll come up with an idea like this and there's this sweet group of people who are down to participate and interact and I love it. Some helped me create merch, art, or sent me super vulnerable DMs about how the music's affected them and that's the purity of music that I try to hold onto. It's nice when music connects and befriends, and to me, this video represents just that.”
