Toronto-based Pretty Matty’s music can best be identified as pop punk. But, as their latest single “You’re Not There” proves, it’s the punk which comes first for the band. And if punk lays the foundation of this musical house, then its walls are made with pop-bounce and its roof is a shelling of modern rock.

In other words, “You’re Not There” interpolates the bouncy filter of pop into the intimacy of punk in a unique way where one side does not detract from the other.

As the title of the single implies, “You’re Not There” is about avoidance and distance,
but this subject is charmed through the pop filter and relates as a jovial melodrama
more than a serious dilemma. And while the instrumentation is clean and polished, the
vocalization retains a rawness which only compliments the track rather than distract it.

No matter how you cut Pretty Matty’s “You’re Not There,” you’ll find the synthesis of pop and punk to be pleasurable and respectable to both parent genres. And while this is a loosie from a past time, it may better reflect the band’s next album, which is said to be worked on this fall.
