PREMIERE: Al Jamal Begins His New Musical Journey with “Doghead”

Skirting off the swan song of Night Auditor’s refined Soul Junk, Al Jamal has embarked on a new, and more personal, musical venture - much to our delight.

The single “Doghead” is Jamal’s first step in his solo effort, and it is a pleasant surprise. Jamal does not recite the steps of his previous bands, but rather he turns into a sharp new direction — one that is equally fascinating as it is ghastly.

Jamal has a clear and puncturing message in “Doghead” that is only reinforced by his elaborative music video. The parallels between the animal and the human are blurred in this macabre world in a tone that initially comes across as humorous. Quickly, however, the track expands into a grimmer tone.

As Jamal explores his dichotomy between humanism and dogism, there’s a bark from an otherwise patient set of drums, followed by the kick of a smooth guitar that eventually propels the track into a haunting choir. The instrumentation of “Doghead” is quiet behind Jamal’s vocals, but they follow his pace, and cautiously, pauses when he does. Jamal’s presence in this track is virtually ethereal.

“Doghead” is a very promising single from Al Jamal. Frankly, we love his previous work with Night Auditor, and see “Doghead” not just as an extension of that well-acquainted sound. There are tangible traces of Jamal’s previous works, but their tone and demeanor breathes them as something new and thrilling.
