A year after his last project, Long Lungs, Oakland musician Kevin Nichols returns with a bangin’ single. In “Hanging on to My Head” Nichols creates a highly creative and provocative space which echoes the distant grunge faze of the 90s. Make no mistake, however, as Nichols proves to advance the formula, as he usually does. “Hanging on to My Head” is alternative, engaging, and fresh.

Since 2017, Nichols has been steadily releasing music that he refers to as “prunge,” the mix of punk and grunge. And upon a first listen to Nichols’ music, it’s clear why he holds this label so confidently: Nichols’ sound is stuck in the midst of a crossroads where it’s easy to mistake the grunge influence as an alternative shift of punk instead. On that first dive into Nichols’ discography, it is unclear which road it walks. It is only after a deeper listen that the grunge cloud is realized overhead.

“Hanging on to My Head” is another step into prunge, but sounds more energetic and lively than Nichols’ previous records. If this single is a prelude to a more bombastic joy of the grunge infliction expressed in a longer project, then we're all for it.
