On and Offstage with Shutups at Treefort 10: A Photo Diary

We met up with our favorite Oakland rockers on the road as their spring tour led them from SXSW to Boise, Idaho, for their Treefort debut.

With a lineup of 400-plus bands and event programming for just about everyone, the Treasure Valley’s stacked arts and music festival has been a haven for choose-your-own-adventure adventurers for a decade. True to the Treefort spirit, Shutups did things their own way.

The band journeyed just outside of Boise to a small town named Caldwell, their home and practice space for the week. They stayed with local legend Scott Pemble, a skater and snowboarder whose presence has been a staple in the local scene for about as long as Treefort has existed. Dubbed The Manor, Pemble’s house used to be a DIY show go-to spot, but it has always been and remains a word-of-mouth sanctuary. For the past decade, Pemble has hosted a multitude of touring bands at his home, from now-defunct and lesser-known acts to some of the most buzzed-about indie bands, including Colleen Green, Girlpool, Spirit of the Beehive, Lala Lala, and Protomartyr.

All bands who come through The Manor have the pleasure of meeting Pemble’s chickens and four friendly goats (Susan, Wire, Magazine, and Rose). In their downtime, Shutups serenaded the animals and showered them with affection and scraps.

Before getting back on the road to finish the final leg of tour, the band paid their final respects by adding their name to Pemble’s closet door log of all who have passed through The Manor. A friendship cemented in time.

Check out more point-and-shoot flicks below (shot on Psychic Blue and Ektar 100 film), as well as some additional moments from Shutups’ killer set at Boise venue The Shredder.

Be it on the road or here on the homefront, we’ll see you at the next gig.
