The Anti-Everything Mantra of Surfbort’s “Lot Lizard 93”

The Brooklyn-born quartet of punk-rockers, formally known as Surfbort, know how to make music so raw it spits in your face. Some months ago, we reviewed their debut studio record, Keep on Truckin. Among those tracks we loved, “Lot Lizard 93” was a particular favorite.

So when Surfbort dropped a music video for the track, we wanted to do a write up! And when we found out that 2020 Olympic skateboarder, Lizzie Armanto, directed the cut? Well, we needed to do a write up!

“Lot Lizard 93” is a track that caves in deeper the longer you stare at it. While the lyrics describe a nihilistic outlook on life, the cadence and light-weight performance — in both the sing-songy vocals and instrumentation — completely erases this depravity. And makes it fun!

The music video is a great new layer of how indifferent this song is towards itself. In every way, the music video fits the same umbrella of adjectives that describes Surfbort as a whole: weird, dangerous, and unforgettable.
