The upcoming LA-based punk rockers, NIIS, are still fresh with only one E.P. to their name, Not Niis, released in October 2020 - but don’t mistake the young band for novices who have yet to find their signature sound. Especially when their latest single, “Big Zoo,” doubles down on the intensity of their E.P. to create an ecstatic and thunderous track.

Punk hues splatter this track all over as if it were a painting. Persecuting the social constructs that mold ready-to-marry women, “Big Zoo” is abrasive in theme and tone. Angst becomes palpable when, in breaks of frenzied instrumentation clashing together dramatically, aggressive lyrics and metaphors breathe.

“Big Zoo” is an ocean of noise, like TV static, that captures feminine frustration as a single demeanor of individuality facing “cult”-like opposition.

Accompanying the single is a substantial music video that retraces the themes and power of the track. Between wedding dresses and black leather, the video is another layer of dejection for the societal mold being persecuted here. Subtle designs and performances like this make “Big Zoo,” and its music video, so replayable and great.

Niis has a long career ahead of them. We’ve been watching the band closely with their released music and live performances, and we hope this year is their year.
