Janelane embraces precious teenage nostalgia on new single ‘Celebrity Crush’
LA based garage-pop band Janelane has just shared their latest single - ‘Celebrity Crush’ is a nostalgic track that details the precious innocence of teenage crushes and magazine obsession - paired with the sultry ‘Flowers From Athens’ both songs will be released on pink vinyl (available for pre-order now) via Vancouver DIY-label Kingfisher Bluez. We asked Janelane lead Sophie Negrini about the inspiration for the new single and more importantly, who her celeb crush is:
“I wrote “Celebrity Crush” when I was 18 or 19 (I’m 24 now), so it’s hard to remember what initially prompted me to write the song. I would definitely say it was inspired by a mixture of my own experiences with celebrity crushes as a teen, as well as my passion for 90’s/early 2000’s pop music. That devout love to your favorite rockstar in your early teens is so precious and nostalgic for me…all the poster clippings on your walls, daydreaming constantly about a chance meeting, being devastated that they’ll never know you exist…yet you write poems for them in your diary and still plan your outfit for the day you maybe do meet them (just in case!) and fall in love instantly…‘cause you still secretly have hope that it’ll happen somehow? It’s a very light-hearted song that pokes fun at how intense those first feelings of infatuation feel, while also just cherishing the feeling of hope that comes along with first crushes. I do feel like it’s important to note that I don’t think idolization of celebrities is healthy, and that a lot of people take their crush obsessions a bit too far. However, I don’t think there is anything wrong with a little daydreaming! My current celebrity crush would have to be Harry Styles, though I didn’t write this song about him. I swear!”
