“Cough Up Cherries” with Kill Birds in the Run Up to 'Married'

It’s no secret — we love Kill Birds. Their 2019 self-titled debut was a gorgeous encapsulation of indie rock and punk that mystified and gripped us. While the record had its more deeper moments, the pervading score was like a fog slowly rolling in, slowly consuming.

To that metaphor, then, the recent series of singles Kill Birds has been steadily dropping is like a lively gust of wind. And “Cough Up Cherries,” the band’s latest single, is a tornado.

“Cough Up Cherries” plays to the band’s greatest strength — the dynamic structure that almost provides a dual-identity to their tracks. In this single, intervals of mellow composition rise into sonical peaks, then crash and splatter forward, before receding back in.

While the single is clearly in the same realm as the self-titled debut’s ghastly miasma, it’s more charged and proactive. And with a stellar music video that truly makes the most out of simple props and shots, that new burst of energy is as visible as it is audible.
